What does mentorship look like?
Last year, I had the privilege of mentoring and guiding a marketing manager at a law firm. It wasn’t a request I was expecting. The idea was to bring an outside perspective, a fresh pair of eyes looking at their marketing activity. It was all about challenging assumptions, setting clear goals, and ensuring accountability. The results were impressive, and it led me to realise just how valuable this sort of support can be for businesses and individuals alike alongside the traditional marketing that our agencies undertake.
I’m often asked about my approach to mentorship, particularly in the context of combining my marketing expertise with a “business coach” angle. From my experience, what people often need is not just someone to hand over a strategy, but rather someone to bounce ideas off, help refine their thinking, and hold them to their commitments.
Flatteringly, I was decently described by one client as “worth more than my weight in gold, more like diamonds!”. Today, the day of writing this, I had an impromptu 30 minute call with another client who is deciding on the vision for their business and they wanted to run through some ideas. Their feedback was “It’s nice to know you can just chat through ideas like this.”
It got me thinking about why this isn’t simply a service I offer more.
Below is a quick snapshot of what you can expect if you choose to work with me on a mentorship basis:
- Monthly Catch-Ups
Regular video call sessions (usually once or twice a month) where we look at progress made since our last conversation. These calls are all about checking in, addressing any roadblocks, and discussing strategies for the next period.
I charge £175 per hour (+VAT) for these sessions, and they can be scheduled at times that suit you. *subject to availability* - Goal Setting and Accountability
We’ll start by agreeing on some key goals, whether that’s increased turnover, better lead generation, or improving specific marketing metrics. Once those are in place, I’ll hold you (and your team) accountable. It means I’ll ask the tough questions, did you follow through on the action points we discussed last time? If not, why not? – and what needs to change? - Outside Perspective on Marketing Activity
When you’re working in the thick of your business, it’s easy to lose perspective. As someone who’s guided marketers and legal professionals, I can help you see what’s really working and what might be holding you back. This might involve re-evaluating spend, overhauling campaigns, or introducing new tools. - Balancing Marketer and Business Coach
This is not just about theoretical advice on which social media platforms to use or what a marketing message should look like. It’s about understanding your overall business objectives and making sure your marketing aligns with them. I’ll happily dive into the practicalities of campaign planning, but I’m also there to challenge your broader vision and help you refine how you run the business side of things. - Potential Outcomes
- Increased turnover: More clarity around your marketing strategy often means better results for your bottom line.
- Addressing marketing problems: From social media to unclear content strategies, we can fix what’s going wrong.
- Detailed focus on marketing activity: We’ll map out exactly where resources should go and why.
- Optimising marketing spend: We’ll look at the return on investment for each channel and decide where your budget is best allocated.
- Options for Full-Service Marketing
Sometimes, you might realise you don’t have the time or inclination to manage marketing yourself. If so, our agencies are on hand. We can take the reins and deliver your marketing strategy end-to-end, letting you focus on other areas of the business.
Interested in Mentorship or Want to Learn More?
If this sounds appealing, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to discuss what your specific needs might be and whether monthly catch-ups, defined goals, and accountability calls would be the right fit. The mentoring I offer is designed to encourage growth, innovation, and clarity, helping you see the bigger picture and execute the finer details more effectively.
In short, mentorship is about having someone in your corner who can spot opportunities, sound an alarm when issues crop up, and cheer you on when you hit those milestones. If that’s something you feel your business could benefit from, I’d love to hear from you.
Cheers,
Tom Stansfield
